American Black Bear

Status: Least Concern

The size and weight of the American Black Bear (Ursus americanus) depends on food ability and geographical range. The farther north the bear is located, the heavier the bear. In Arizona, black bear’s average about 250 lbs. for females and 350 lbs. for males. They are found, locally, in most woodland habitats, including pinyon-juniper, oak woodland, coniferous forest, and chaparral. They have a keen sense of smell, are great swimmers, and have long curved claws for grasping and climbing trees. Coats can vary from black to brown, cinnamon, beige, and white (very rare). Black bears can be active during the day and night. Diet mostly consists of plants, grubs and larvae and small amounts of meat. Most are shy, secretive, and cautiously curious.
