Capuchin Monkey

Status: Varies by sub-species and location. Almost all are decreasing.

There are at least 5 separate species of Capuchin Monkey, all found throughout Central and South America. Heritage Park Zoo houses Capuchins that most resemble the Tufted or Black Capped Capuchins (Cebus apella). The tufted capuchin is especially noted for its long-term tool usage, one of the few examples of primate tool uses other than by apes. All species have prehensile tails, used like an extra hand, their tails aid in climbing and carrying objects.

Capuchins live in groups of 10 to 40 members. These groups consist of related females, their offspring, and several males.
