Coatimundi
Status: Least Concern
Of the four species of Coati, the White-nosed Coati (Nasua narica) is the only species found in Arizona.
Coati are closely related to raccoons; they are good climbers and are equally comfortable on the ground and in the trees. Groups called ’bands’ consists of females and their offspring. Males leave their band when mature and may be alone until they can find a band to join. This is where the term ’Coatimundi’ comes from, which means ‘lone coati’.
