Golden Eagle

Aquila chrysaetos

Golden Eagles are North America’s largest bird of prey, with wingspans up to seven and a half feet and diving speeds reaching 150 mph. Their keen eyesight allows them to spot prey from great distances, and they can attack animals as large as deer, carrying up to 8 pounds.

Solitary by nature, Golden Eagles maintain territories of up to 55 square miles and mate for life. Some individuals are migratory. They are protected under the Bald Eagle Protection Act.

Tekka, born around 2004, sustained a wing injury that prevents flight but has since healed. Tekka arrived at HPZS in 2013.
