Javelina or Collard Peccary
( Pecari tajacu )
“Dude,” “Taz,” and “Tater-tot” all arrived at the Sanctuary in 2012 as orphans. “Bonzai” arrived as an orphan in 2014.
- Javelinas, found from the southwestern U.S. to northern Argentina, resemble pigs but have a three-chambered stomach.
- They prefer plants like cactus and fruit but also eat insects, and are fed pellets, fruits, and vegetables here.
- Living in groups of up to 50, they have poor eyesight but a strong sense of smell.
- Long tusks deter predators like mountain lions and jaguars, and they defend themselves when threatened.
- They can become pests in residential areas by damaging lawns and gardens.
