Mountain Lion
Status: Least Concern
The mountain lion (Puma concolor) has the widest range of any wild land animal in the Americas. Found from North to South America, this cat has so many names, it is even in the Guiness Book of Records! Some names you may be familiar with are puma, cougar, and panther. It is the largest of the “small cats,” meaning they can purr and meow. Their claws can be retracted like most cats. Its coat is mostly a grayish-brown, although cubs are initially spotted with blue eyes. The most recognizable feature of the American mountain lion is its long and heavy tail, which measures almost two-thirds of its body. They are also known for their stamina and jumping abilities.
