Docent Program

WHAT EXACTLY IS A DOCENT? The dictionary's definition is "tutor".  Docents are akin to educators and the Docents here at the sanctuary fulfill the vital role of conveying information about the sanctuary's residents: assisting with special events, leading outreachs in the community, and always leaving a memorable impression of the facility. Docents are ambassadors for all the rescued animals at Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary.

HOW DO YOU BECOME A DOCENT? Attend a six week (once per week) workshop that covers the Sanctuary animals, teaches how to give tours to different age groups, outreach training, and animal handling. You will receive a handbook, t-shirt and name tag (a small fee covers these materials).  Docents are also required to attend informal quarterly meetings and additional training classes.
